Home Spa Sundays

Lately I've started making Sundays into "me" days. During the week, I'm not very attentive to beauty routines, and by Friday I've resorted to tying my hair up and going to work with minimal makeup. To start Monday off feeling pretty and confident again, I use Sunday to pamper myself.

Sundays are for a nice cup of tea, putting on some good music, painting nails, cleaning up eyebrows, and applying a face mask. The masks I have pictured here are the Mario Badescu Whitening Mask, Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque, and Kose Seikisho Mask White.

Occasionally I'll do a little extra like the pore strips, but I don't tend to need those as I'm not prone to blackheads. I also take the opportunity to do some other chores like deep cleaning makeup brushes and ironing or de-pilling clothes.

Just the face brushes get deep cleaned today! I haven't used the eyeshadow brushes much so they just get a spritz of brush cleaner.

On side note, remember to follow VeryAmy on bloglovin' now that Google Reader is getting discontinued!

How do you spend your Sundays?

How My Life Has Changed From College to Corporate

Kicking off my heels in my hotel room after a long morning at the sales meeting.
It's been about nine months since I graduated from college and started working full-time. My life has changed in some unexpected ways since I made the transition from campus life to office life.

1. I rarely try to look nice on weekends unless I have to. When I was in college I would always take the time to look nice and dress fashionably every day, even if I was just going to class. Now that I have to do this five days a week, all I want to do on weekends is wear yoga pants, tie my hair up, and go everywhere with no makeup...

2. I have had to go a shade lighter on foundation because I never go outside anymore.

3. I hate shopping at stores like Forever 21 because the large crowds of teens get on my nerves.
I've gotten too used to shopping at quiet stores like Banana Republic and LOFT.

4. I am almost always sitting. I used to walk or ride my bike to class everyday, but now I go straight from sitting in the car to work, to sitting at my desk all day, to sitting in the car again, to sitting on my bed in the evening. Physical activity is something that you have to consciously work into your schedule when you have a desk job.

5. I tend to prefer relaxing at home with a drink by myself over going out and partying. (Though I still party like a college student occasionally, I only want to do it once in a blue moon now.)

6. My interpretation of "going out for drinks" has changed. The other day a friend of mine who recently turned 21 invited me to "dinner and drinks." I interpreted this as having a relaxed dinner accompanied by a glass or two of wine, then parting ways around 9pm. What he had actually meant was going out to dinner, maybe with some wine there, and then hitting the bars to get drunk until the late hours of the night... this is what really made be realize that I don't think like a college student anymore. :/

I find myself in a weird situation--no longer identifying with friends who are still in school, but also feeling vastly younger than my colleagues at work. The toughest part is having nothing to contribute to a conversation about home ownership and parenting, which tend to be the main topics of casual chit-chat.

Regardless, I prefer working to studying. Being in marketing is pretty awesome. One reason is because I get to attend the fun events, like the sales meeting last month.

This is my kind of fail attempt at an updo for the awards night at the sales meeting. I dressed it up by putting a vintage Coro feather brooch in my hair. I love how versatile brooches can be, and there's a treasure trove of affordable vintage ones floating around on eBay and Etsy.

My nails matched my dress! I meant to take some more detailed photos but didn't have good enough lighting. My dress got plenty of compliments though--it definitely stood out among all the black that everyone else was wearing.

A shot of the lounge that the after party took place in. It looked even nicer once the lights were dimmed.

Another thing that made me feel too young--the DJ at the event would only play music for the older crowd. After having a couple drinks I tried to ask him to play some electro house, but he told me "they're not drunk enough for that yet." :(

Michael Kors Bromley Boots: a cheaper alternative to Stuart Weitzman 5050

For the past couple of weeks I have really been wanting a good pair of flat boots, mainly for shopping or days with lots of walking. It's a bit late in the season, though, and I found a lot of stores were clearing out their boot selection already. Good for deals, but hard to find something that works.

I have seen several petite bloggers praise the Stuart Weitzman 5050 boot, but at almost $600 it is way beyond my budget. I'm also not very gentle to shoes, and could not justify spending that much for something that will probably get beaten up.

I had pretty much given up on boots until next year when I walked into Marshall's on a whim during my lunch break. Like everywhere else, there was a meager selection to choose from in the clearance section; but I was very surprised when I pulled this pair down from the top shelf.

Michael Kors Bromley, size 6 (similar in black python at full price or with a wedge heel for $125)

I honestly thought they were 5050s at first, as the design is very similar. The price? $79! I later found that these originally retailed for $250. You know that feeling when you know you've found a steal? Yeah, that's how I felt. Not to mention that I really love Michael Kors!

The leather upper on these boots is super soft, and the fit at the shaft is probably the best that I'll be able to get for my ~11 3/4 inch calves at this price point. (yes, I have stick legs... D:) If you compare my photos with the ones from Jean's review of Stuart Weitzman, you'll see that these MK ones are a bit roomier in the shaft, especially at the knee. I don't really mind this as it allows for more freedom to move, and leaves just enough room for jeans. I think the SW boots also have a hidden zipper as opposed to the exposed zipper on this pair.

Another pair of boots that I had tried earlier on was the Miz Mooz Bellini. I liked the strap details and the design as it looked on the website, but they just looked all wrong on me.

Roomy around the calves when wearing jeans.... I'm not even going to get started on how it looked with bare legs. It seemed to run large as I had a lot of room in the toe of the boot as well. Perhaps a size 5 or 5.5 would have looked better... but I decided to just snap a few photos and immediately box it back up as a return. (As you can see I didn't even bother taking the paper off the buckles.) So glad I found a better pair for over $100 less!

ModCloth "All Neutral" Dress

Yesterday I was very excited to find that my ModCloth order had arrived a couple days earlier than expected, so I wanted to show-and-tell on my blog as soon as possible. Unfortunately, I did not receive the "We've Come So Noir" dress due to oversell, but ModCloth gave me an immediate refund so I wasn't too heartbroken. The "All Neutral" dress was the one I pinned all my hopes on anyway.

As is, this dress is extremely roomy. The length is perfect, but there is just way too much fabric. If there were maybe 50% less fabric, I think this dress would fit me the way it fits the mannequin on the website.

Some reviewers on the website said that the armholes were too big. I have to agree!

I wasn't too surprised to find that it looked like nightgown on me; I had suspected that it would after I saw the statement on the website that it ran large. The reason I still bought it was because I knew if all else failed, the dress would still look good with a trusty belt.

Et voilà! Belting it looks much better and also helps with the armholes. Now it's good to wear and will definitely be my pick for my upcoming cocktail event! Of course it's not ideal that I have to wear it with a belt, I am very happy with the quality of the dress and think the price is quite a steal considering. Note that it is very sheer though, so wear nude-colored underwear with it! It also requires a strapless bra, but that seems to be a given with a lot of evening dresses.

The tie at the neck is longer than how it looks on the website. In these pictures, I actually wrapped each end around my neck once before tying them. When I just tie it into a bow, the tails go down to about my waist.

All-in-all, I would not say that ModCloth is petite-friendly, but I think that petites can find pieces that work on there. Sizing and quality seems to vary a lot, so you definitely have to rely on the measurements provided on the website and customer reviews.

Oh, and how could I forget to mention that I also got this beauty this weekend?! :) This is actually my first car ever!

vroom vroom!

Hope everyone has an awesome week!

Dressing Room Review: J. Crew origami sheath dress

I have an upcoming event at work that is cocktail attire. Seems easy enough, but I've been deliberating long and hard about what kind of dress to get. As the new hire freshly out of college, there is no doubt that I am going to be the youngest person at this event. To top that off, I'm petite, so I can easily look childish or kiddy if I choose the wrong dress.

With this in mind, I was dismayed to find that a lot of stores use "cocktail dress" interchangeably with "prom dress." Horrified at the thought of looking like a high schooler instead of a business professional, I immediately ruled out poofy skirts, tulle, and/or taffeta.

Looking for something classier, I tried on this dress at J. Crew...

J. Crew origami sheath dress, size 00 (petite size available online only)

I really liked this dress on the website, and decided go to the store to try the regular 00 size. As expected, the regular sizing does not fit as it is supposed to. It was roomy everywhere, but especially around the shoulders and bust, where the fit should be snug. The skirt wasn't exactly a "sheath" on me either, but I hoped these would all be remedied on the petite version. It did fit pretty nicely at the waist and the length hit right above my knees. (You just can't tell in this photo due to the slight downward angle.) I considered going online and buying it in size 00 petite, but... wait! Look at it, I could probably wear this in the office! This isn't an evening dress... Try again, Amy.

So what am I looking for? An evening dress that looks classy and not "high school"... and definitely not "Vegas"! The more I narrowed down my criteria, the more I began to think of Audrey Hepburn...  so the next two contenders are from ModCloth.

First, a little black dress:
(I snagged the last one so it's no longer available... sorry!)

Next, a flowy, neutral dress:

I've never ordered from ModCloth before, and I'm not sure how petite-friendly they are. Luckily, ModCloth has plenty of helpful reviews regarding fit and, if worse comes to worse, free returns. I am still waiting for these to arrive, so stay tuned for my reviews. :)
